As Miss USA, Ellen represented the United States at Miss Universe 2021 where she was placed in the top ten. She had also been crowned Miss Kentucky USA 2021, becoming the second woman from Kentucky to win Miss USA.
Smith was born and raised in Springfield, Ohio, and attended Shawnee High School in 2016. In high school, she was involved in choir, orchestra, volleyball, and drama. She later moved to Lexington, Kentuck to enroll in the University of Kentucky, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and a minor in political science in 2020. Moreover, as a student, she served as the vice president of the University’s chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.

She represent Germantown in the competition, and eventually won the title.
As Miss Kentucky USA 2021, Elle went on to represent Kentucky in Miss USA 2021 which was held on November 29, 2021, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She ascended to the Top 16, later to the Top 8, and eventually was announced the competition’s winner. Following her win, Elle became the second Kentucky woman to win the title of Miss USA, after Tara Conner was crowned Miss USA 2006.
