Joyce Garbaciak Biography
Joyce Garbaciak is a renowned American journalist working at Channel 12 as a “special projects” correspondent and reporting on stories “in a limited capacity.” Previously, she worked as a co-anchor at WISN 12 News at 6:00. She has over 35 years in the Miwaukee television market and has interviewed President Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, and New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan one-on-one.
Garbaciak reported an investigative series that caused a transition in Wisconsin law about the posting of code violations at daycare stations. She is a nine-time Chicago regional Emmy Award winner, and a documentary on bullying that she hosted went on to receive national recognition with the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award.
Moreover, the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association inducted Garbaciak into its Hall of Fame in 2022, making her the 12th woman of 159 people in the Hall. During the same year, in October, she was inducted into the Milwaukee Press Club’s Media Hall of Fame. Since 2012, Garbaciak has been a member of the Wisconsin Silver Circle, a lifetime achievement award given by the Chicago region of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Joyce departed from WITI-TV in early 2005 after working as a primary news anchor and reporter for 16 years. During her time, she anchored three daily newscasts, comprising the 10 p.m. report. In 2006, she joined WISN, as the position allowed her to work part-time on fulfilling, important projects and still be more hands-on at home with her family. In 2015, she resumed full-time on WISN.
Regarding her schooling, Joyce attended Northwestern University’s prestigious Medill School of Journalism, where she obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She graduated with high honors and earned an RCA/NBC Fellowship to finish her graduate studies. Garbaciak is an active member of her alma mater, working on Northwestern’s Council of 100, an invitation-only alumnae organization devoted to mentoring and assisting students move from college to employment.
Before Milwaukee, she served as a reporter and anchor in Nashville and Wausau, and she has also worked as visiting faculty at the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank in St. Petersburg, Florida.
