David Ono Bio

David Ono is a Japanese American filmmaker and Emmy award-winning journalist. Currently he is a news anchor for KABC-TV Channel 7 in Los Angeles, California. David serves as the co-anchor for ABC7 Eyewitness News at 4 and 6 p.m. with Ellen Leyva. In addition, he fills in for co-anchor Marc Brown at 5 and 11 P.M.

David joined ABC7 in 1996, and during that time has witnessed history worldwide, covering Hurricane Katrina, Haiti’s earthquake and Japan’s tsunami. He traveled across Europe and Asia chronicling brave acts of the Nisei soldier from World War II.

Besides ABC7 David has also worked at KOVR in Sacramento, California, KDBC-TV in El Paso, Texas, KOSA-TV in Midland/Odessa, and KXAS-TV in Dallas.

Apart from his broadcasting career, Ono has produced a number of documentaries chronicling the Asian American and immigrant experience. These includes the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and Phan Thi Kim Phuc, the “Napalm girl” from the Vietnam War. David alongside Jeff MacIntyre created the documentary The Legacy of Heart Mountain. It is based on the Japanese internment camp Heart Mountain Relocation Center. In the documentary he personally interviewed several survivors, including the mother of judge Lance Ito.

David is a winner of 9 Edward R. Murrow awards, 31 Emmys, 2 RTDNA National Unity Awards, 6 AAJA National Journalism Awards. Additionally, Society of Professional Journalists honored David with the Distinguished Journalist Award by the . Recently he was named LA Press Club Journalist of the year.
