Jim Crane is an American businessman from Houston, Texas. He is the chairman and chief executive of Crane Capital Group, Crane Worldwide Logistics, and Crane Freight and Shipping. Besides that, Jim is also the owner and chairman of the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball, which under his ownership has won two World Series championships. In 2017 and 2022.
Crane attended Lutheran High School North and graduated in 1972. He then got enrolled at Central Missouri State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial safety and also became a member of the fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon. Moreover, he gave Lutheran High School North a donation of $1 million to improve their athletic facilities and enlarge the size of the campus from 40 to 67 acres.
Furthermore, after graduating college, Jim went into the insurance business and even borrowed his sister $10,000 and founded Eagle USA Airfreight. This is an air-freight logistics business. Later Eagle USA Airfreight became Eagle Global Logistics and then EGL. Crane took his profits from EGL and formed Crane Capital Group. Apart from that, he also became a director and shareholder in Western Gas Holdings and a director of Fort Dearborn Life Insurance Company.
Moreover, he has also ranked as the nation’s top CEO golfer and in 2010, he purchased the Floridian National Golf Club from Wayne Huizenga. That not being enough, in 2017, Crane opened two restaurants in Houston, Osso and Kristalla, and Potente, named for his children. Further in 2019, he became a partial owner at Aperture Cellars, a winery in Sonoma County, and several franchises of Papa John’s in Russia.
