Vassy Kapelos Biography
Vassy Kapelos is a popular Canadian political journalist presently working as the chief political correspondent at CTV News. Previously, Kapelos hosted Power & Politics on CBC News Network from 2008-2022. Before that, she served as the Ottawa bureau chief for Global News and hosted the network’s Sunday morning political affairs show called The West Block.
In November of 2022, Kapelos headed to CTV News to host Power Play and Question Period.
Vassy Kapelos Career
Vassy started reporting in Swift Current and worked for Global Television Network’s stations in Saskatoon & Edmonton such as the Edmonton station’s provincial political affairs reporter. In that position, she became well known for breaking the story of the large severance package paid out to Premier Alison Redford’s outgoing chief of staff in 2013, which forced Redford to come up with a new sunshine list for public employees.
In the same year, Kapelos was among the reporting team for the series “Code Red”, an investigative series about the ambulance industry in Alberta, which brought up interviews with paramedics and other sources and an in-studio interview with Alberta Minister of HealthFred Home to disclose an under-resourced industry that was endangering Alberta community.
This series triggered the provincial government to review the system as a whole and received the 2013 Edward R. Murrow Award for Best News Series in the international category. Vassy moved to the Ottawa bureau in 2013 and became bureau chief in 2016 and host of The West Block in 2017 after the retirement of Tom Clark. Moreover, Vassy left Global in February 2018 and joined CBC News Network as the new host of Power & Politics.
In addition, on November 8, 2022, CTV revealed that Kapelos would become its chief political correspondent and host of two political shows, Power & Politics and Question Period. She took over for Evan Solomon, who joined the online political media outlet Gzero. She as well will host The Vassy Kapelos Show on iHeartRadio.
