Stephanie Ruhle Biography

Stephanie Ruhle is a well-known American journalist who works as the NBC News Senior Business Correspondent and anchor of Stephanie Ruhle Reports and Velshi & Ruhle. She previously worked for Bloomberg Television as managing editor and news anchor, as well as Bloomberg News as editor-at-large. Ruhle was also a co-host of the Bloomberg Television show Bloomberg GO.

Ruhle was also one of three Bloomberg journalists who broke the story of the London Whale, identifying the trader responsible for the JPMorgan Chase trading loss in 2012. She enrolled at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania’s “Lehigh University,” where she received a bachelor’s degree in international business in 1997. Ruhle also studied in Italy, Guatemala, and Kenya as her major subjects. She returned to Lehigh University in 2017 to deliver the graduating address.

Ruhle spent 14 years in the finance industry before joining Bloomberg. She worked as an intern for Merrill Lynch throughout the summer while still in school. Ruhle joined Credit Suisse in 1997 and worked as a hedge fund salesperson for six years. She worked as a vice president at Credit Suisse First Boston and was the highest-producing credit derivatives salesperson in the United States during her time there.

Ruhle additionally joined Deutsche Bank in 2003 as a credit seller handling hedge funds. She worked as a managing director in Global Markets Senior Relationship Management for eight years. She created the Global Market Women’s Network at Deutsche Bank to help women advance in the company’s executive ranks.

Before departing the network, Ruhle co-hosted Bloomberg GO with David Westin. She has interviewed Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, NBA player Kobe Bryant, hedge fund managers Stanley Druckenmiller and David Tepper, chairman, and CEO of JP Morgan Jamie Dimon, Donald Trump, Martha Stewart, former Vice President Al Gore, Sean Parker, business magnate Russell Simmons, Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade, Masters winner Jordan Spieth, CEO, and chair of Macy’s Terry Lundgren, as well as music moguls Sean Combs and Kanye West.

Additionally, Ruhle was the first reporter to break the tale of the London Whale, the trader behind the 2012 JPMorgan Chase trading loss, in April of 2012, alongside Bloomberg writers Mary Childs and Bradley Keoun. Bruno Iksil, a London-based JP Morgan trader, built positions large enough to affect pricing in the $10 trillion credit derivative market, according to Ruhle.

Ruhle also penned a bold response to Paul Tudor Jones’ comments on women in trading for the Huffington Post in June 2013, which drew reactions from the media and the financial industry. She sat down with Martha Stewart in October of that year to discuss blogging, social media, and the introduction of the “lifestyle” category.

Ruhle likewise produced and hosted Haiti: Open For Business? (2015), a documentary about the country’s rising market five years after it was devastated by a horrific earthquake. She also starred in Shark Land: A Mission Blue and Fusion Expedition (2015), a documentary that highlights the plight of sharks on Cocos Island, a Costa Rican national park.

Ruhle interviewed then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2015, who received negative press for telling Ruhle that “the World Trade Center came down during [previous President George W. Bush’s] rule.” During a panel discussion with Stephanie the year before, rapper Kanye West slammed photographer Annie Leibovitz, revealing that Leibovitz had backed out of taking his formal wedding photos just one day before his wedding to Kim Kardashian.

In 2013, Ruhle’s interview with Martha Stewart made public a simmering conflict between Stewart and Gwyneth Paltrow, when Stewart questioned the actress’s role in the “lifestyle business.” She is a columnist for Shape.com, the magazine’s website. In October 2012, she was featured on the cover of Working Mother magazine, as well as in the April/May 2013 issue of Fit Pregnancy. 201 Magazine, IWantHerJob, Glass Hammer, and Business Insider have all featured her.

Stephanie is no longer with Bloomberg and has joined the MSNBC Morning Lineup as a solo anchor after co-hosting a business show with Ali Velshi called Velshi & Ruhle, which ran on weekdays and Saturdays. Ruhle co-chaired the Women on Wall Street (WOWS) steering group and formed the Corporate Investment Bank (CIB) Women’s Network.

She is also a previous member of the iMentor Corporate Advisory Board and a member of the board of trustees for Girls, Inc. New York. Similarly, Ruhle is a member of 100 Women in Hedge Funds, The Women’s Bond Club, and The White House Project’s corporate council, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing women in the industry, government, and the media.
