Andre’ Bernier Biography

Andre’ Bernier is a two-time Emmy award-winning American meteorologist currently serving as the Cleveland’s-stationed WJW-TV’s weekday evening meteorologist at 5 p.m. He joined WJW in February 1998 when the station broke down in Cleveland by beginning a one-hour, weekday-morning newscast from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. Bernier received the AMS Seal of Approval (#286) and is a two-time Lower Great Lakes Emmy awards winner. For more than 19 years, Bernier was on weekday mornings prior to joining Cleveland legend, Dick Goddard to the weekday prime-time on May 28, 2007.

In addition, he began the outdoor weather set design which he took with him from his previous role at KARE-TV 11, the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bernier’s passion for weather started when he was 4 years old when he saw dark clouds from an approaching storm. That was the start of an all-consuming interest to learn weather of all types. However, during his childhood in New England, he took a specific fancy to winter snowstorms and the popular “nor’easter.”

When he was 16 years old, Bernier became a fixture in New Bedford radio by starting his broadcast career proving weekend weather forecasts for his hometown radio station, WBSM-AM. A number of mentors like WBSM’s Stann Lipp, Dick Stevens, Jim Loomis, and newsman Jim Phillips (still on WBSM) helped him sharpen his skills as a broadcaster while continuing to learn in synoptic meteorology (forecasting) by shadowing the late Charlie Taylor, meteorologist for WLNE-TV, whose studios still stationed in New Bedford in 1970s.

Bernier went to New Bedford High School for his high school education. Later on, he attended Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont where he obtained his bachelor of science degree in meteorology in 1981. While at college, Bernier began a student run-company “The New England Weather Net, which provided local radio stations (including WSTJ-AM, St. Johnsbury, Vermont) with daily weather feeds by phone.”

Immediately after his graduation, Bernier left Cleveland for his first role when he was hired as a weekend meteorologist in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at eastern Iowa’s then-premiere station, KGAN (known as WMT-AM-FM-TV). After 8 months, he left Iowa to join the then-speculative national cable channel start-up, The Weather Channel. The very first on-camera meteorology team was Bernier and Bruce Kalinowski (Edwards) when The Weather Channel began broadcasting on Sunday, May 2, 1982, at 8:00 PM EDT.

In addition, in 1985, Bernier headed to Minneapolis, where he worked at WWTC-AM, Northwest Airlines (as a trans-Atlantic fight forecaster), and finally KARE-TV, Minneapolis, where he worked with his wife during the weekday morning newscast. Bernier and his family headed to Cleveland in 1988, where in the same year, he started working at WJW Channel 8, working as a morning meteorologist until 2007, when he shifted to evenings.

Bernier is married to his beautiful wife, Sally. Sally is as well a veteran meteorologist on Cleveland television. The duo met in 1978 while at college. However, in 2009, Bernier’s wife retired from broadcast meteorology to look after their son, Noah.
